“Healthy house” the sustainable laneway houses of Riverdale

healthy house

150 Sparkhall and 152 Sparkhall in Riverdale

This is a 1,700-square-foot semi built in a partial laneway in Riverdale. (Sparkhall is a laneway for part of the street)

The design for this building won a sustainable-housing competition in 1991.

The house it uses recycled rainwater and waste water. The water purification system mimics the natural path rain follows when it passes through the ground to a spring. Solar panels provide most of the heat and electricity.

The house was built for less than $100,000 (10% more than a standard design at the time). It uses 10% of the water and energy required to heat a conventional house.
